With its central location, historical and cultural significance, and proximity to the National Forest, it is easy to understand the appeal of Leicestershire. The county offers a mix of rural and city living options and with good quality conveyancing solicitors in Leicester, there is every reason to consider a move here.
For those with a family or a love of the great outdoors, one of the top places to visit in Leicestershire is Bradgate Park and the neighbouring Swithland Wood. The park extends over 850 acres of pathways and green space. At one end is Swithland Wood, extending over a further 217 acres of ancient woodland and forms part of Charnwood Forest.
Bradgate Park is of great historical significance since, the park is the only remaining enclosed deer park dating back to medieval times in the whole of the East Midlands. Deer were originally introduced to the park by the Normans and descendants of these deer are still living in the park today. As the grounds have never been cultivated, the site is of great interest to archaeologists, with many organised events and digs each year. The park is known to contain some of England’s oldest rocks. Within the park, the remains of Bradgate House can be visited. The property dates back to Tudor times and was the birthplace and childhood home of Lady Jane Grey, famously known as the “Nine Day” Queen.
Another famous landmark found is the park is Old John’s Tower, a Gothic style tower thought to be constructed in the 1780’s, that has since become a famous icon of Leicestershire. There is also a war memorial dating back to 1924 built to commemorate those from the Leicestershire Yeomanry regiment who lost their lives in the Boer War and later those from World War One. Running through the park is the beautiful River Lin with resident ducks, swans, moorhens, and other wildlife. The river runs into Cropston Reservoir which dominates the landscape at one end of the park.
Swithland Wood is considered to be of great scientific interest and plays an important role in conservation in the local area. The wood also contains many disused quarries from which local Swithland Slate was mined and is now featured on many roofs and gravestones within the local area. Some of the oak trees are over 500 years old.
With 5 public car parks, a visitor centre, café and other refreshments, the park and woodland is a perfect family day out. Running the length of the park is a wide flat tarmac path, well suited to pushchairs, children’s bicycles and scooters, and wheelchairs. For those a little more adventurous, there are many paths that wind through the park over different levels. Even on busier days, there is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a picnic and beautiful open space. Although care must be taken of the deer and there are some designated on lead areas, dogs and dog walkers are welcome in the park. Bicycles can be used in certain areas also.
