THE HISTORY OF WEST BROMWICH
Despite its close proximity, the market town of West Bromwich is not actually in the city of Birmingham itself. Instead, it falls within the metropolitan borough of Sandwell and metropolitan county of West Midlands. Lying 6 miles to the Northwest of Birmingham city centre, West Bromwich historically was part of the county of Staffordshire and is now part of the area fondly known as the Black Country.
Like much of the Birmingham area, West Bromwich has ancient rural roots, with its popularity as a good place to form a settlement coming from its prevalence of good natural resources and also water network. West Bromwich is no different, and this has led to an industrial and modern appearance today rather than retention of its rural history. West Bromwich features in the Domesday Book as Bromwic.
West Bromwich has strong roots in coal mining until the late 20th century when the growth of industry began to dominate the area. West Bromwich is synonymous with the production of metal components such as springs and nails, brick making, and iron manufacturing, electrical engineering and the automotive industry to name a few.
The area experienced extensive bombing during World War II, due to its strong industrial focus, and associated civilian deaths. This was an extension of the infamous Birmingham Blitz.
Despite much regeneration of the area and housing stock in different phases and for different reasons over the years, West Bromwich still benefits from its original Victorian properties, and several key historic buildings including a Manor House with moat dating back to the 13th century, thought to be haunted and also an Oak House dating back to 16th Century.
WEST BROMWICH TODAY
Today, West Bromwich is a popular residential location in the West Midlands. The area benefits from a mixture of Victorian properties, terraces, semi detached and detached houses. Following immigration booms from the Commonwealth, West Bromwich also benefits from an established multi-cultural community.
Two main features of the area are Sandwell Valley Country Park, an area of scientific significance and includes Priory, the River Tame and Forge Mill Lake. Sandwell Valley RSPB, an important breeding ground for birds also lie within the boundaries of West Bromwich.
For keen sports fans, the area is home to West Bromwich Albion Football club which was founded in 1878 and has been successful in many football leagues and competitions for much of its existence. The team also regularly takes part in the Black Country derby with rival teams Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Famous celebrity faces born in West Bromwich include Cat Deeley and Frank Skinner both of whom have had prevalent television careers. Olympian Denise Lewis, and members of Judas Priest, Led Zeppplin and Thin Lizzy were all born in West Bromwich also. In addition, the Poundland founder had his first shop right here in West Bromwich.
West Bromwich is home to the New Square shopping centre and entertainment venue which opened in 2013 and Sandwell General Hospital sits in the centre. There are a number of good schools in the area and all of the main high street shops. All of this makes West Bromwich a good place for people looking for an affordable home in an area with all that a family could need. Good rental yield in the area also mean that investment opportunities in the are also a good option.
