08 Jan Is Surrey really the home of the stars?
Surrey is home to some of the most expensive millionaires playground in England, and has recently become a favourite migration route for most Londeners making Surrey the home of the stars. Surrey is also an area which bucks the trend in a recession, but it is also full of storybook charm, pictures, ancient woodlands and villages full of smiling residents.
The upmarket property trend in Surrey started when the stockbrokers and bank managers started settling in here at the beginning of the 20th century which has led it to be known as the ‘stockbroker belt’. Freshly minted wealth still flows through its sunken lanes.
Research by agents Knight Frank indicates that the average property prices in Surrey are 3.2 per cent higher in January this year than they were in January 2013, while the number of house-hunters had increased by 12.3 per cent.
The above research also has revealed that 55 per cent of country houses over £5m sold in 2012, many of them in commuter counties, went to international buyers, a 13 per cent increase over the previous year.
Surrey is also, of course, a Premier League hotspot, in other words, the Wilmslow of the South according to Zoopla. John Terry and Jamie and Louise Redknapp are at Oxshott, and Chelsea FC’s training ground is at Cobham.
The 2012 Olympics have seen a large influx of new comers to the Surrey Property market, where flocks of cyclists have discovered the swooping leafy trails on the Surrey Hills after watching the Olympic road race flash through.
The ancient woodlands are being rediscovered and newly appreciated. Some cyclists have even bought houses here to be close to the action.
