NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

Newcastle upon Tyne began life as a settlement during the Roman times in a fort based around one end of Hadrian’s Wall. Remains of this internationally recognised World UNESCO Heritage Site can still be found dotted around the city. Over the years the city remained a notable stronghold against a number of invasions. Newcastle upon Tyne remained part of the county of Northumberland until 1400. The city, which is located in the North East of England right on the east coast and ready access to the North Sea via the River Tyne, has a strong history in the ship building industry. Newcastle upon Tyne was once known as home to one of the largest ship building and repair centres in the world. This was also aided by the steel industry along the North East coast.

Today, the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a rich and varied economy including importance in the science, finance, retail, education, tourism and nightlife sectors. It is also one of the UK’s 11 core cities. This partnership between some of the biggest cities in the UK, aims to create productive, inclusive and green cities across the different regions within the British Isles.

The city is home to the Great North Run attracting thousands of visitors to the city each year as both professional and amateur runners take on the 13.1 mile route around much of Tyneside and the city. The city’s skyline has a number of iconic features, including the Millenium Bridge opened in 2001, the Tyne Bridge opened in 1928 and St James Park, home to Newcastle Football Club. Shoppers regularly flock to the popular Metrocentre and retail park.
